The Contractor shall maintain the line and grade of the pipe in the
trench by means of the grade or batter board method. Not less than two
boards ahead and one board behind the working point shall be set at any
time and, as each new board is set, it shall be visualy checked with the
proceeding boards. If the boards have been correctly set and the error
is yet apparent, the Surveyor shall be notified immediately so the
staking may be checked. Failure to notify the Surveyor shall put the
full responsibility of correcting the line and grade on the Contractor.
1. The boards shall be level at all times and located far enough from
the trench so that subsidence of the ground adjacent to the trench
will not cffc:t their position. The chalk lines shall be kept taut
and shall be set at a minimun distance of five feet apart.
G. When tapping a lateral watermain or service to an existing watermain,
the Contractor shall be required to make connection to the exiting
watermain while the existing watermain is under pressure (i.e., wet tap)
using an AWWA Approved drilling machine, tapping sleeve and tapping
valve. Conductivity must be maintained from the main that was tapped to
the new main by whatever methods necessary. A connection to an existing
watermain by methods other than a wet tap can be done only with approval
of the Architect or if specifically shown on the plan. The Contractor
shall verify the size of the existing watermain prior to ordering the
fittings for the connection.
3.04 BACKFILLING AND GRADING
A. After the pipe has been laid, inspected and blinded, the trench backfill
shall be placed in 12" lifts and compacted by pneumatic tampers, tamping
rollers or vibrating rollers. Each lift shall be thoroughly compacted
before succeeding lifts are placed. backfill material shall be mineral
soil free of sod, roots, topsoil, stones over 6" in greatest dimension,
frozen lumps, and all other extraneous material.
B. Where granular soils are used for backfill, the thickness of lifts may
be increased to limits determined by the Engineer.
C. Trenches will be back€illed with select backfill material only in areas
where indicated on the Drawings or by the Engineer.
5
KKE1186
