PLANNING RKPORT
DATE:
CASE NUMBER:
APPLICANT:
LOCATION:
ACTION REQUESTED:
PLANNING CONS4DERA'TIONS:
•
6 March 1985
1581-85
Sperry Corporation
Northeasterly of Highcrest Drive and
Walnut Street
Approval of Variance to Sign Size and
Location
1. The Sperry Corporation, formerly known as Sperry Univac, occupies
approximately 1.5 million square feet in three structures owned by the
Space Center, I+nc., at an area between Walnut Street and Highcrest Drive
at the far .iesterly end of the City. The Sperry Corporation has been at
this location since the structures were originally constructed in the
early 60s and have continuously expanded at that location. The current
plans include expansion of their facilities in the existing structures and
potential expansion with additional structures on the site.
In March of 1972, the Planning Commission and Council approved the
installation of a series of directional signs so as to identify the sum 20
points of access to the three structures. Now that the company has
changed its name from Sperry Univac to Sperry Corporation, they propose to
install a new uniform sign system to carry out the same objectives that
being to facilitate the identity and function of the various entrances to
the structures.
2. Attached is a reduced copy of a proposed sign program which illustrates
the location of proposed directional signs at nine locations to the west,
south, and east of the structures, contiguous to Eiighcrest Drive and
Walnut Street.
3. Also attached is a copy of a letter dated 6 February 1985 from J. A.
Grundtner, Facilities Planning and Design Department, outlining their
proposal. Also attached is a copy of a typical sign indicating the nature
of the message to be put on the sign and the dimensions of the sign
itself. We have reviewed the sign proposals with representatives of the
Sperry Corporation and our only concern is the possibility of the signs
impeding any lines of sight at street intersections. Mr. Drown suggested
that if the sign program is approved, that the City reserve the right to
require sign modification or removal in the event a sight line problem
develops at any particular intersection.
One way to alleviate this line of sight problem is to make sure the bottom
on the sign is placed at a high enough elevation so as to not impede
visibility at the corners. This program as proposed indicates this height
to be four feet from ground level. Depending upon the grade of the
streets involved at the intersections, this distance may or may not be
