0
•
CASE NUMBER: 1581-85
APPLICANT: Sperry Corporation Page 2
adequate. Thus, a condition that the elevation of the bottom of the sign
should be subject to review by the staff at the time of installation,
(based on an on -site inspection) may be helpful in insuring that no line
of sight problem will develop.
4. The City's Zoning Ordinance make provision for directional signs to be
placed within one foot of the right-of-wa- but not to exceed a size of 1.5
feet by three feet. The signs proposed as five (5) feet by seven (7)feet.
Thus, a variance to directional sign size is requested.
5. The need for the signs is perhaps unquestioned, if you have ever tried
find your way to one of the entrances, one quickly realizes the importance
of the directional signs. The Planning Commission and Council, however,
may wish to question the applicants regarding the size of the signs. The
literature submitted indicates the letter size is designed to be readable
at 250 feet. In this case, where all of the signs are so close to the
right-of-way, perhaps consideration could be given to reducing this size.
6. Extensive signage is allowed for the structures by Ordinance which is not
utilized at the site. Based on street frontages, a total of six (6) pylon
signs are authorized for the three buildings. Each sign could be 25 feet
high with a sign area of 100 square feet each. In addition, up to four
(4) percent side elevation areas of the structures could be allowed for
signs on the buildings. The Sperry people have indicated that they are
thinking in terms of a single identification sign at the site at some
point in the future. Obviously, however, the existing signage and that
proposed is far below the ultimate allowance.
7. The Sperry Corporation operations are an important ingredient in
Roseville's industrial base. They have 4,500 employees at the site in
question, and approximately 500 additional persons in the Waters Edge
Building at the northeast corner of Snelling and Trunk Highway 36.
