I
t
Merila and Associates
STS Project 93492
December 19, %9i4
-10-
strength of at least 1-ton per square foot can be proportioned f.or a
maximum net allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000-pounds per square
foot. The net allowable soil bearing pressure refers to the pressure
which may be transmitted to the foundation soil in excess of the
pressure due to the final minimum depth of overburden. We recommend
that a minimum width of 20 inches be utilized for proportioning strip
footings, and a minimum dimension of 30 inches be used for isol?'.ed
column footings. Exterior footings and footings in unheated portions
of the building should be supported at least 4 ft below final grade to
provide adequate protection from frost penetration. Interior footings
should be placed a minimum of 2 ft below final grade in order to pro-
vide adequate confinement for the foundation bearing soil.
We recommend that no foundation concrete be placed in standing water or
on soils loosened or softened by construction traffic. Rather, ground
water seepage or rainwater accumulation as well as any softened cr
frozen soils should be removed prior to foundation placement. We
recommend that an experienced STS Technician make an on -site
observation immediately prior to the placement of foundations, to
determine that soil conditions are as anticipated in this report and
suitable for foundation support at that time. Total settlement of the
foundations placed as above should be 3/4 to 1 inch with differential
settlement on the order of one half (1/2) of this amount.
0-
