.Merila and Associates
STS project 93492
December 19, 1984
-14-
soil should be removed and replaced with properly placed .and compacted
fill prior to the placement of any aggregate. We recommend that an STS
Technician observe this proof -rolling operation. We would be pleased
to comment further on the design of bituminous drives and parking areas
once traffic design loads are known.
Construction Considerations
.t
During the excavation of these fill and organic soils, it is likely
that perched ground water coi, ditions will be encountered at various
locations and elevations across the site. It is our opinion that the
influx of water will be relatively slow and should be controllable
through standard sump pit and pump operations. If feasible, we
recommend that a test pit be dug prior to construction to determine
water inflow rates and appropriate dewatering schemes. We recommend
that all standing water and loosened or softened soils be removed from
r the excavation bases prior to the placement of any structural fill or
foundations. If winter construction is planned, we recommend that the
foundation subbase soils be protected from freezing. We recommend that
ice and snow be removed from excavation bases and that no structural
fill or foundations be placed on frozen soil.
The side walls of any excavation must be adequately sloped, or sheeted
and braced, in order to provide adequate stability. This must be
carried out in accordance with pertinent OSHA regulations in order to
provide maximum safety for the personnel working in the excavations.
' It is solely the responsibility of the contractor to make such pro-
visions for personnel safety.
M
