Older people especially appreciate living in a familiar
neighborhood, close to places and friends that are important to
them.
Elder Homestead is small enough to foster an informal and friendly
environment.
Each Elder Homestead is sponsored by a responsible community
organization - an organization the older person can trust. The
sponsor provides a potential consumer base, assists in the
development process as an advocate for the Elder Homestead, and
provides ongoing volunteer support to residents. This sponsoring
organization keeps the wellbeing of its community members at the
heart of the Elder Homestead.
Elder Homestead is designed to meet the changing needs of older
people. As long as the resident and the resident's family can
secure needed services, with the assistance of their physician and
Elder Homestead staff, Elder Homestead can remain their home. If,
however, the resident, the family and the physician believe the
needs of the resident can be met better in another environment,
part of the Elder Homestead service concept is to assist residents
and their families in identifying alternative ways to meet their
needs.
Special rental arrangements assure individuals they can maintain
their independence. They can prepare snacks and cook meals in
their own apartment. Each resident has their own key providing
privacy. They have their own private bathroom. They can bring
their own furniture and decorate as they wish. Any services they
need will be given in their own apartment.
Two -person apartments offer accommodations for
caregivers.
