UUang ial-Egaakility <br />Elder Homestead was planned with cost savings in mind for the older <br />person who needs some daily assistance but not full-time nursing <br />home care. Basic service costs are determined on minimum care <br />rather than the maximum care standards set at nursing homes. <br />Additional costs are only incurred as needed. <br />Part of the reason for lower costs is that staff costs have been <br />kept minimal. Care delivery decisions are made by the residents <br />and their families, friends and volunteers. Residents are also <br />encouraged to help one another. Paid personal care and supportive <br />services (e.g. home health) are available as a backup to this <br />informal system. <br />Monthly costs at the Elder Homestead can be kept to about 70% of a <br />private room in a nursing home. <br />
