1
Biographical Information
Thomas R. Grimm
Page Two
thousands of other items, all first quality, all the top one or
two brands in each category. "That was the weekend it snowed
ten inches and people were parking seven blocks away just to
check us out," recalls Tom.
Two months later, Memorial Day weekend, another 40,000
thronged to a new warehouse in Fife, Washington, just minutes
north of the Tacoma Dome —off I-15. November, 1984, a warehouse
was opened in Seattle and two days later an additional
warehouse opened in Anchorage, Alaska. Within nine months four
100,000 square —foot Price Savers Warehouses had signed up
nearly half a million card carrying members.
In August, 1985, Kroger Company of Cincinnati purchased
Price Savers from the Seattle —based Pay 'n Save corporation.
Kroger, with annual sales in excess of $17 billion, gives added
impetus to Tom's goal of rapid growth.
On November 29, 1985, the fifth Price Savers Wholesale
Warehouse opening in Ogden, Utah was the biggest yet. Tom's
concept of wholesale warehouse sales is solidified by each new
warehouse and continued increases.
SUCCESS BASED ON HONESTY
Tom attributes Price Savers success to delivering an honest
value. Unlike some discount stores that use a warehouse motif,
Price Savers is a genuine warehouse. We have buyers
negotiating the best possible deals with the leading brand name
manufacturers in the country. A minimal warehouse margin of
nine to ten percent is added to our cost, and that is what our
business members pay. Group members pay just five percent over
the posted price. We don't sell seconds, we don't advertise
"loss leaders". If we can't do it right, we won't do it at all.
FAMILY AND CIVIC AFFAIRS IMPORTANT
m is actively involved in his church, the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter --day Saints, has served in a bishopric position
and is currently a Sunday School teacher.
Tom is family oriented and relaxes by spending time with
his wife, Sandy and their four children, They especially enjoy
riding their ATC three --wheelers together.
Tom has spoken at trade associations, sma11 business and
civic group functions as well as to college students.
