Roseville Soils Testing Annual Report: Year 1
December 29, 2022
Page 2
Soil Testing Results
Soil testing occurred after one spring thaw (June) and after one year (October). Fertility and health tests were sent to two
different labs: The University of Minnesota and Ward Labs (Nebraska). Soil structure, color, and plant growth were
observed in the field. Infiltration testing was also completed in the field.
Soil Organic Matter:
Minnesota Lab - Loss on Ignition (%)
vegetation
Site Site Description management 10/15/2021 6/13/2022 10/10/2022
Њ ƭǞğƌĻ ƓğƷźǝĻ Ћ͵А Ћ͵Ў Ћ͵Џ
Ћ ƭǞğƌĻ ĻķŭĻ ƷǒƩŅ Ћ͵Љ Ќ͵А Ќ͵Њ
Ќ ƷƚƦ ƚŅ ĬĻƩƒ Ώ ĭƚƒƦƚƭƷ ƓğƷźǝĻ Ћ͵Б Ћ͵В Ќ͵Њ
Ѝ ƷƚƦ ƚŅ ĬĻƩƒ Ώ /hbwh\[ ƓğƷźǝĻ Ћ͵Ћ Ћ͵Ѝ Ћ͵Ћ
Ў ƷƚĻ ƚŅ ƭƌƚƦĻ Ώ ĭƚƒƦƚƭƷ ƷǒƩŅ Ќ͵Б Ѝ͵Ћ Ў͵Б
Џ ƷƚĻ ƚŅ ƭƌƚƦĻ Ώ /hbwh\[ ƷǒƩŅ Ќ͵Љ Ќ͵Ћ Ќ͵Ћ
Percent organic matter is considered good for plant establishment at 3%.
years. That said, the trends seem to indicate a greater increase in organic matter in areas with compost top-dressing.
Soil Structure & Color:
Topsoil is variable here, depending on the composition and mixing with the fill materials. Sandy Loam topsoil had loose
single grained structure and loam topsoil had strong blocky structure. A drought in the last half of summer dried the soils
a lot, baking the loams into strong blocky bricks and causing the sandy soils to collapse around the holes. It is hoped that
continued composting efforts will lead to moderate granular structure in any soil texture.
Change in soil color was not observed after one year. Topsoils remained at 10YR 3/2 or 10YR 2/2 in the Munsell Soil
Color Book (very dark grayish brown or very dark brown). Soil color change might not be detectable in the three year
study time-frame.

Qbhf!6!pg!63
