Regular City Council Meeting
Monday, June 3, 2024
Page 13
Councilmember Strahan concurred and did not think question seven got at what the
Council wanted to know. She did want to make sure that one of the other questions,
describing skills or services the applicant feels they bring to this Commission, did
not get left out because she thought it was very important.
Councilmember Schroeder was not sure if there should be two different
applications. She thought maybe there should be one for every Commission.
Councilmember Etten made a proposal for a question to replace question six and
he agreed he did not like question seven. Taking some of what was in the main
application process and asking, "How do you see your lived experiences
contributing to the work of this Commission and the City's Equity and Inclusion
initiatives". He thought this combined a few of the questions.
Councilmember Groff concurred with the question change.
Mayor Roe indicated the only thing he was concerned about with combining the
way suggested,is that it seems to lose the specific activities, skills, and experiences
related to the work of the Commission and talking about lived experiences.
Councilmember Strahan agreed there is a possibility of having both and she thought
there is a space in all of the Commission applications for that equity and inclusion.
She thought this was a valid extra question and agreed there is a possibility of
combining them but they could lose something of real value.
Councilmember Etten appreciated the feedback. He suggested question 8 be kept
but question 9 be shortened to get rid of the first clause and state"How could your
life experiences contribute to the City's equity and inclusion initiatives", getting
back into that lived experience.
The Council concurred.
Mayor Roe thought the Council could discuss the application questions at a later
time. The key action for tonight is to try to get the Ordinance and the process going
and provide feedback and suggestions later.
The Council discussed addresses and demographics of Commissions with staff,
deciding not to exclude addresses from the applications.
Ms. Olson reviewed check-ins for success with the City Council.
Mayor Roe stated from his point of view about terms, because the Council is
appointing amid a normal term period, it seems to follow along with the vacancy
