Attachment C
PHASE IV: Strategic Planning Retreat
End of October through December 2024, In-person
Strategic Planning
Consultants, City Council, Department Heads
Retreat
Strategic planning should energize, build engagement & leave your entire organization knowing they can handle
whatever comes their way. INspiring SIGHT utilizes coaching competencies and relationship systems coaching
approach to strategic planning. In essence, the retreat is part strategy, coaching, systems work, truth telling &
decision-making. Our process was designed based on the Five Reasons Strategic Plans Fail to Be Strategic. In this
two-day retreat, we will present a summary of Phases I, II, III that informs the board of the stakeholder feedback
which is synthesized into gaps, trends, themes, competitive advantage, risks, threats, and opportunities. The retreat
will include a combination of the following activities:
•Mini training on the anatomy of a strategic plan
•Report on stakeholder feedback
•Tie in of community input
•Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats
•Facilitate discussions and exercises for helping leadership focus and prioritize investments & strategies
•Create draft of ©Strategy Tree which includes creation of the vision, mission, strategic directions, and values (One-
page strategic plan, see pg. 10)
We’ve broken the strategic planning retreat into four individual, four-hour sessions to allow for reflection time in
between sessions.
Session 1 Define & set expectations, anatomy of a strategic plan confirm alignment w/ vision, mission, strategic
priorities
Session 2 Set priority goals & measurements for each strategic direction. Determine where existing activities fit
Session 3 Continue work from session 2, consensus on a draft of final plan
Session 4 Finalize the strategic plan, and guided implementation
©StrategyTree
Strategy & Change Are Living Processes
INspiring SIGHT’s one-page ©StrategyTree allows organizations to visualize the organizations’ strategic
plan as a living document and litmus test for all decision-making. Our process also advances teams through
the change associated with implementing strategy.
Our approach to strategic planning is to synthesis all stakeholder feedback into trends, themes, gaps,
strengths, opportunities, weaknesses/threats, and your organizations’ competitive advantage. After
reporting that information to the board, I lead several facilitated discussions to help the board connect the
dots between what they heard, what they know, what they don’t know and what they vision for the
organization. As we move through creating drafts to all components of the strategic plan; vision, mission,
values, and strategic directions, we test them to see if they are in alignment before finalizing any plan.
On the following page, we’ve included the template for the ©Strategy Tree. This is our one-page strategic
plan visual. Organizations can use this visual with internal or external audiences, or easily adapt the
information into another graphic design that aligns with their brand. This can be kept in front of board and
staff members by taking a photograph, using in PowerPoints, or hanging in facility / meeting space.
Included in our strategic planning retreat is a brief tutorial on the anatomy of a strategic plan and how each
of the components are used to help your board ask questions and make decisions in alignment with your
plan. The tree metaphor for the strategic plan is helpful for board and staff members in keeping the plan
alive. I’ve provided a sample plan from a previous client.
Please note, this is a high-level planning document. When guiding staff through implementation, we move
them to more easily maneuverable templates in Microsoft Word, Excel or existing systems they may have
already hadin place.
Pg. 9
Qbhf!81!pg!2:4
