<br /> Indigenous Peoples’ Day <br />October 14, 2024 <br />Whereas: For longer than any other people, Indigenous nations have lived upon the land where our nation <br />and City now stand; and <br />Whereas: Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an important time to celebrate the rich culture, tradition, and history <br /> and acknowledge the important contributions of America’s original people; and <br />Whereas: It is also an opportune time to educate the general public about the severe challenges American <br />Indians have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which American Indians have worked to <br />conquer these challenges; and <br />Whereas: The land in present day is located on the ancestral and contemporary lands of American Indian <br />people and home of the original people of Turtle Island since time immemorial, and without whom, the building of <br />this City would not have been possible and holds great historical, spiritual and personal significance for its original <br />stewards; and <br />Whereas: American Indians over the many years protected and preserved the landscape of Minnesota and the <br />City of Roseville, including their intrinsic traditional knowledge, labor, technology, science, philosophy, arts as <br />well as their cultural belief system that stipulates that they are protectors and stewards of the natural environment <br />for the benefit of all; and <br />Whereas: American Indian people today face significant disparities that impact their safety, health, <br />wellbeing, education, vitality, and cultural preservation, and the City of Roseville understands that in order to help <br />combat these disparities, government entities, organizations, and other public institutions should change their <br />policies and practices to better reflect the experiences of American Indian people and uplift our country's <br />Indigenous roots, history, and contributions to ensure greater access and opportunity; and <br />Whereas:In 1990, representatives from 120 Indigenous nations at the First Continental Conference on 500 <br />Years of Indian Resistance unanimously passed a resolution to transform Columbus Day into an occasion to <br />strengthen the process of continental unity and struggle towards liberation, and thereby use the occasion to reveal a <br />more accurate historical record; and <br />Whereas:The Twin Cities community has a strong history of over four decades of American Indian activism, <br />which the City celebrates and honors; and <br />Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the City Council hereby declares that the City of Roseville observes <br />Indigenous Peoples Day on October 14, 2024 in order to promote appreciation, healing, reconciliation, <br />understanding, friendship and continued partnerships with the American Indian Community. <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville to be affixed this <br />rd <br />23 day of September 2024. <br />________________________ <br />Mayor Daniel J.
