<br />REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION <br />Date: 2/24/2025 <br />Item No.: 7.e. <br />Department Approval City Manager Approval <br /> <br /> <br />Item Description: Receive Equity and Inclusion Commission Update <br />1 <br />2 Background <br />3 In 2024, the City Council established a new commission called the Equity and Inclusion <br />4 Commission (EIC). This occurred after a series of discussions listed below. <br />5 November 27, 2023 - Council received Human Rights, Inclusion and Engagement <br />6 Commission (HRIEC) recommended changes to scope duties and functions <br />7(Attachment 1) <br />8 January 22, 2024 - Joint meeting with HRIEC to discuss scope, duties and functions <br />9(Attachment 2) <br />10 March 11, 2024 - Discussed structure and scope of HRIEC (Attachment 3) <br />11 April 8, 2024 - Discussed feedback related to the HRIEC scope and duties <br />12(Attachment 4) <br />13 May 13, 2024 - Discuss draft purpose statement, format of group and next steps and <br />14 timeline (Attachment 5) <br />15 June 3, 2024 - Considered ordinance adopting an Equity and Inclusion Commission <br />16(Attachment 6) <br />17 <br />18 As part of the June 3, 2024 Request for Council Action (RCA), because there had been <br />19 considerable discussion regarding the structure of the proposed new group, staff proposed <br />20 scheduled check-ins with the City Council to ensure the new commission was set up for <br />21 success. This is one of those scheduled check-ins. <br />22 <br />23 When the commission was established, the scope and duties were outlined in the <br />24 ordinance as below: <br />25 <br />26 PURPOSE: <br />27 There is established an Equity and Inclusion Advisory Commission for the City, which shall <br />28 serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council and city staff by applying an equity and <br />29 inclusion lens to city policies, procedures, projects, programs, operations, and initiatives. <br />30 <br />31 SCOPE, DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS <br />32 A. Review and provide feedback on departmental equity and inclusion work plans which <br />33 serve to advance equity and inclusion throughout the organization. <br />34 B.
