REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: 4/21/2025
Item No.: 7.b.
Department Approval City Manager Approval

Item Description: Receive Feedback on Commission Interview Process
1
2 Background
3 The city annually recruits and appoints people to fill commission vacancies, typically in the
4 spring and fall. The City Council held a special meeting on February 19 and 20 to interview
5 Commission applicants. This is an opportunity for council to share feedback on the
6 process.
7
8 As part of the interview process, staff surveys applicants regarding their interview
9 experience (see below). Although responses are often limited and not conducted as a
10 scientific survey, comments have provided staff with suggestions on how to improve the
11 process from an applicant persepective. Staff is providing council with some information
12 that has been shared in these surveys as they discuss feedback related to the process.
13
14 Below is a table that shows the number of applicants for commission vacancies since 2023,
15 as well as the number of respondents to the survey. Due to the small number of
16 respondents, staff is sharing broad ideas that have been included in the applicant's
17 responses rather than specific comments so as to not personally identify respondents.
18 Some comments by applicants have suggested that the length of interviews is too short,
19 some have expressed a desire for a "position description" with qualifications for
20 commissioners, and there were requests for feedback on why they were not selected.
21 Further below is a table that lists the average rating of the experience for the application
22 process and interview process.
23
Commission Applicant Spring Fall 2023 Spring Fall 2024 Spring
Experience Survey 2023 2024 2025
Number of Respondents 9 2 2 4 9
Number of Applicants 21 8 12 11 28
Number of Vacancies 7 4 4 7 12
24
25
26
Qbhf!72!pg!216
