Indigenous Peoples’ Day <br />October 13, 2025 <br />Whereas: For longer than any other people, Indigenous nations have lived upon the land where our nation <br />and City now stand; and <br /> <br />Whereas: Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an important time to celebrate the rich culture, tradition, and history <br />and acknowledge the important contributions of America’s original people; and <br /> <br />Whereas: It is also an opportune time to raise awareness of the severe challenges American Indians have <br />faced both past and present, and the ways in which American Indians have worked to conquer these challenges; and <br /> <br />Whereas: Roseville stands on the ancestral and contemporary homelands of the Indigenous people of Turtle <br />Island – land that holds great historical, spiritual and personal significance for its original steward, and without <br />whom, the building of this City would not have been possible; and <br /> <br />Whereas: American Indians over the many years protected and preserved the landscape of Minnesota and the <br />City of Roseville, contributing their intrinsic traditional knowledge, labor, technology, science, philosophy, arts as <br />well as their cultural belief system that stipulates that they are protectors and stewards of the natural environment <br />for the benefit of all; and <br /> <br />Whereas: American Indian people today continue to face significant disparities that impact their safety, <br />health, wellbeing, education, vitality, and cultural preservation, and the City of Roseville understands that <br />addressing these disparities require government entities, organizations, and other public institutions to align their <br />policies and practices to better reflect the experiences of American Indian people and uplift our country's <br />Indigenous roots, history, and contributions to ensure greater access and opportunity; and <br /> <br />Whereas: In 1990, representatives from 120 Indigenous nations at the First Continental Conference on 500 <br />Years of Indian Resistance unanimously passed a resolution to transform Columbus Day into an occasion to <br />strengthens continental unity, advances the struggle towards liberation, and thereby use the occasion to reveal a <br />more accurate historical record; and <br /> <br />Whereas: The Twin Cities community has a strong history, spanning more than four decades, of American <br />Indian activism that the City celebrates and honors; and <br /> <br />Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that the City Council hereby declares that the City of Roseville observes <br />Indigenous Peoples Day on October 13, 2025 in order to promote appreciation, healing, reconciliation, <br />understanding, friendship and continued partnerships with the American Indian Community. <br /> <br />In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Roseville to be affixed this <br />nd <br />22day of September 2025. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />________________________ <br />Mayor Daniel J.
