The code requirement is 30 feet. The proposed sign would meet the
height and size requirements of the ordinances. The variance is needed so that the
sign can be seen from Snelling Avenue.

Mr. Lawrence indicated that the McDonald Corporation is putting pressure on the local
owner to construct the proposed sign which is the same being used by McDonalds through-
out the country.

Discussion

Mr. V. Johnson inquired as to whether the requirement for the new sign was part of the
contract between the local owner and the McDonald's corporation.

MY, Lawrence responded that he thought it was.

Mr, V. Johnson expressed concern that when the new McDonald's had been constructed the
Commission had been told that no new sign was going to be constructed because of the
expense and actually McDonald's knew at that time that they were going to have to con-
struct the sign. He stated that if the new sign had been constructed when McDonald's
was built that it may have made a difference on the variances for other signs which
have recently been constructed in the area.

Mr. Grauel indicated that he thought the proposed sign was a marked improvement over
the existing sign.

Recommendation

Mr. Grauel moved and Mr. Durgin seconded, that the Comnission recomnend approval of
McDonald's restaurant request for variance to sign setback at 2075 North Snelling
Avenue. Roll Call, Ayes: Grauel, V. Johnson, Kellett, Membrez, Durgin and G, Johnson.
Nays: None.
