Frankly, I am surprised at some of the statements made in the document. In an effort to <br />provide information relative to the Cornlnents, I have prepared the following points for our discussions with the city <br />council members. These comments include information about produclion at the Twin Cities MRF (TCMRF), <br />materials stream components and quality as well as "comments in response to statements in the CiIy's document. <br /> <br />Production Information <br /> <br />. The TCMRF has successfully recovered and shipped more than 80,000 tons of recyclables this year through <br />July 31. This is approximately I 1,000 tons per month. <br />. The recovery rate at the TCMRF is nearly 95 percent for the year through July 31. <br />. The TCMRF reported a recovery rate of approximately 97 percenl to the State of Minnesota for 2002. The <br />difference from year to year is largely the result more commercial and out-State material of lower qualtIy being <br />delivered to the facility in 2003." " <br />. The 1CMRF receives materials generated by both businesses and residents with materials being processed on <br />three processing lines. <br />. Residentially generated materials account for approximately 70 percent of the materials processed at the <br />facility. <br /> <br />Material Components and Quality <br /> <br />. The largest component of residentially generated materials is paper, at approximately 73 percent of the total <br />residential stream. Of Ihis component, newspaper is the largest contributor, representing 77 percent of the fiber <br />component or 56 percent of the total residential stream. <br />. Glass represents approximately 15 percent of the residential recycling stream. . <br />. All of the newspaper recovered at the TCMRF is marketed as #8 deink news in contrast to the lower grades 01' <br />#6 news or residential mixed fiber. 0"" 0 <br />. Newspaper from lhe TCMRF is regularly tested for quality by bale audits. Multiple news mills conducting <br />their own independeut audits have confirmed results from these audits. <br />. Consuming mills have expressed a high degree of satisfaction with paper produced by the TCMRF, being on <br />par or better lhan paper from other suppliers, including paper from two,stream collection programs. <br />. The TCMRF actively partners wilh Bowater - Thunder Bay, the largesl newspaper mill in North America, to <br />meel the highest quality standards for production. (See lhe attached letter) <br />
