TCMRF Single-Sort Constituent Test

In addition to the major production grades, there are several areas/categories where small
amounts of materials are produced. These were collected in containers and weighed
individually. These categories include:

. Scrap steel items from single-sort process system.
. Bulky items from container process system.
. Air classifier cyclone "fluff."
. Container process system floor sweepings.
. Spillage at baler I (materials falling off bales as extruded from the machine)

The tipping floors and infeed conveyors for both systems were emptied prior to the
completion of processing.

FINDINGS AND RESULTS

Table 2 provides a summary of weights for materials produced during the test and reports
percent of production. The table provides broader categories for reporting in order to
report production results while providing a minimum level of confidentiality for
production data.

TABLE 2 - PRODUCTION RESULTS FOR TEST ON OCTOBER 18. 2003

SINGLE STREAM PROCESS SYSTEM TONS PRODUCED % OF PRODUCTION
Newsnaner 44.055 58.81
Other Pape;:(OCC & Mixed) 10.553 14.09
Scrap Steel 0.550 0.73
Residue' 1.298 1.73
Floor Sweepin.s 4 10.400) -
CONTAINER PROCESS SYSTEM
Cans (Aluminum & Steel) 3.003 4.01
Scrap Steel 0.060 0.08
Plastic 2.591 3.46
Mixed Glass 8.387 11.20
Color Sorted Glass 1.248 1.67
Residue 3.162 4.22
Total 74.907' 100
Total Recoverv 70.447 94.05
Total Residue 4.460 5.95

Newspaper is the majority product produced from the sorting process. It is produced in a
"negative sort" fashion that means it is left on the single-sort conveyors as the last

, Although classified as "residue" for this test, this material is comprised mainly of items not targeted for
recycling. At the TCMRF, the chief components are film plastics and miscellaneous plastic items (toys,
baskets, tubs, etc.)
4 Floor Sweepings, a result of spillage from the process line, are collected at the end of every shift and
returned to the tip floor for processing. They are not counted as processed material.
5 Difference between total inbound and processed equals 0.63 percent.

8
