not having all relevant information and simply avoiding making a
necessary decision because you fear the outcome may disappoint
someone or you fear you will make the wrong decision.

3. Paralysis-by-Analysis
Sometimes it seems like the more we study an issue the more con-
flicted or confused we get. Instead of gaining clarity, we become
more muddled. Eventually, we suffer paralysis-by-analysis, not
knowing which way to turn within a maze of information and op-
tions.

4. Integrate Thinking and Doing
There needs to be some happy middle ground
between rushing to judgment on the one hand and
paralysis-by-analysis and other decision-making
dilemmas on the other. We need to realize we will
never have all information before us. Life is too
complex. Yet we shouldn't make an uninformed
public decision when good, relevant information and
insights are available.

There is always the learning that occurs from doing something posi-
tive and then seeing what happens. In other words, integrate think-
ing and doing. By taking action we generate experience from which
we learn. Have a bias for action - not thoughtless, careless action but
action based on the best information and judgment available. Then
review the results of that action, make adjustments, and act again.

A continuous cycle of thinking - doing - reviewing - and acting can
result in solid progress.

18
