Keep your overall goal in mind. Keep your eyes on the prize. Decide
in advance what goals and interests you think are paramount and
where you can compromise. Begin with the end in mind and pursue
it vigorously.

F. Make Your Reasoning Visible

People will have greater trust in a process where there are visible rea-
sons for decisions made and actions taken. When our reasons are not
visible, then action, even wise action, appears arbitrary. And an arbi-
trary decision kills credibility even if the result proves to be sound.
Make the reasons for your actions and decisions visible.

G. Don't Play to the Grandstand; Keep your Goals and Purposes
Uppermost in Your Mind

Your uppermost goal is to do what is best for Roseville. Your up-
permost purpose is to find truthful, sound reasons to support what is
best for Roseville in the long run under the circumstances before you.

Consequently, don't let emotions (yours or others), ambitions (yours
or others), someone's personal agenda (yours or others), personal at-
tacks, or other hardball tactics deflect you from this goal and these
purposes.

H. Compromise?

Compromising means making concessions in order to achieve a re-
sult that is mutually satisfactory though it may not seem ideal to you.
Compromising shows you can revise your thinking in light of new
information or fresh insights.

24
