<br />Traffic Control Devices <br /> <br />Watch for Children Signing <br /> <br />Purpose <br />A variety of signs exist to try and warn of <br />the presence of children, "Watch for <br />Children," "Slow, Children at Play," etc. The <br />request for these signs generally sterns <br />from parents' concern for their children's <br />safety in the streets near their home. <br />Unfortunately, the request for this type of <br />signage is based on a widespread but false <br />belief that traffic signs provide protection. <br /> <br /> <br />Effects <br />Volumes No Effect <br />Speed No Effect <br />Traffic Noise and Air No Effect <br />Traffic Safety No Effect <br />Advantages . Low initial cost for one installation. Installation plus an annual maintenance cost <br /> may become significant if installed at a large number of locations. <br />Disadvantages . Signs of this type might indicate that the street is an acceptable place to play <br />Problems Targeted . Not effective for any of the common traffic issues <br />Design . The Watch for Children warning signs are not standard signs included in the <br /> Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices because of their lack of <br /> effectiveness in slowing traffic or increasing safety of neighborhood streets. <br /> <br />APRIL 2005 <br /> <br />16 <br />
