Walkable Communities Workshop
Monday, May 8, 2006
Harriet Alexander Nature Center

Welcome and introductions - Mayor Craig D. Klausing and Gary MacFadden,
Director of Operations, Nation Center for Bicycling and Walking.

. Attendee's introduced themselves, identified their city, county, regional
affiliation and what piqued their interest in this topic. 62 people
representing Roseville, New Brighton, Falcon Heights, Little Canada,
Lauderdale, St. Paul and Ramsey County present.

. Point of note: Gary asked how many people walked to HANC for this
workshop, only one person raised their hand.

Presentation - Mark Plotz, Program Manager, National Center for Bicycling and
Walking. See attached "Creating Walkable Communities" handout.

. Through-out the presentation individuals in attendance made the following
comments: (pertaining to the topics being discussed)

a Ernest Wojahn - felt the intersection where pedestrians have to
cross on B2 & Dale is not safe.

a Maggie Kahler - felt most bikers do not obey traffic rules.

. When Mark asked how many walked to school, 80% raised their hands.
When asked if their children or grandchildren walk to school now, only one
person raised their hand.

a Jan Vanderwall - Falcon Heights Elementary School is having kids
walk to the end of their block, and then safety patrols walk them as
a group to school.

a Sarah Brodt Lenz - It's not just a kid problem, elders also have
problems getting thru intersection due to the lighted cross walks
being timed.

. Open areas seem to invite speeders, and where there are hills cars slow
down.

. Suggested ways to make intersections safer -
. Consider no turn on red
. Count down signals - timed according to surroundings
. Get rid of visual obstructions
. Put islands in the middle of the intersections.

a Dan Soler - County Rd. B/Dale & Co. Rd. B/Harnline, Ramsey
County added a turn lane on each side, with striped shoulders, but
they didn't see any difference in capacity, no flow difference. But
they felt it was safer for the pedestrians/bicyclers.
