HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES Tuesday, February 10, 1987 I. Call to Order The meeting was 7:30 p.m. called to order by Chairperson Thomas at II. Roll Call Members present: David Bailey, Robert King, Thelma McKenzie, Edythe Nackerud, Betchen Oberdorfer, and Brenda Thomas. Members absent: Stanley Borden, Zoe Jenkins, Karen Matts, and Roger Wachter. Others present: Ron Moorse, Staff. III. Business A. Martin Luther King Tribute: Thomas indicated congratulations are in order to McKenzie for a successful Tribute. Several suggestions were made concerning next year's Tribute and Essay Contest. Nackerud suggested that the planning for both events begin earlier next year. She also suggested that the Essay Contest be kept at the Junior High, and that something different be developed for the Senior High. King suggested that subcommittees be set up for each activity. He also suggested that an art project, such as a poster contest, would work for the Senior High participation. Oberdorfer suggested that a letter be sent to the churches to get school children organized for the Martin Luther King Day "March to the Capitol" next year. B. Other Activities: King asked whether there are other special events that the Roseville Commission can tie into in the Spring. McKenzie suggested that the Commission may want to help get a Human Rights Commission started in one of our neighboring cities such as Shoreview or Mounds View. It was suggested that the League of Human Rights Commissions first approach the cities. Then the Roseville Commission would get involved. McKenzie suggested that the Commission could also become involved in letter writing campaigns and fact finding regarding various human rights issues. She also suggested the Commission may want to begin a scholarship fund through fund raising efforts. For example, there could be a Human Rights Commission endowed scholarship at the Roseville High School.
