<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1989 <br /> <br />I. Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Chairman King at 7:30 p.m. <br /> <br />II. <br /> <br />Roll Call <br />Members present: <br /> <br />Robert King, Stanley Borden, and Betchen <br />Oberdorfer. <br /> <br />Excused Absences: Zoe Jenkins, vickie Wright, Edythe Nackerud, <br />Thelma McKenzie, and Jackie Lindberg. <br /> <br />Unexcused Absences: David Bailey and Mary Litsheim. <br /> <br />Others present: Ron Moorse, Staff and Mayor Frank Rog. <br /> <br />III. Approval of Minutes <br />Borden moved, Oberdorfer seconded, that the minutes of the <br />September 12, 1989 meeting be approved. <br /> <br />IV. Business <br />A. Grievance Update <br />McKenzie provided a written update of a grievance she <br />is working on. The attorney representing the respondent <br />has indicated he will provide her with the respondent's <br />position within a week. <br /> <br />King indicated that two additional grievances have come <br />to the Commission. He has contacted the grievants and <br />asked them to provide information regarding their <br />grievances. <br /> <br />The Commission discussed how best to deal with a <br />grievant who does not respond after making the initial <br />contact. It was suggested that a letter reminding the <br />grievant of the seven month deadline and encouraging <br />the grievant to respond promptly should be sent. <br /> <br />Oberdorfer suggested adding more commissioners to <br />handle the workload generated by the various projects <br />and activities of the Commission. <br /> <br />B. Upcominq commission Activities <br />The Commission discussed upcoming activities. It was <br />determined that the Commission should present informa- <br />tion about the Martin Luther King Day Tribute and the <br />Human Rights Award at the first Council meeting in <br />November. <br /> <br />Oberdorfer stated it is important the Commission <br />get the word out regarding the Human Rights Award. <br />Mayor Rog suggested contacting the Chamber of Commerce <br />to assist in publicizing the award. <br />
