<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1989 <br /> <br />I. <br /> <br />Call to Order <br />The meeting was <br />7:30 p.m. <br /> <br />called to order by Chairman Oberdorfer at <br /> <br />II. <br /> <br />Roll Call <br />Members present: <br /> <br />Borden, Litsheim, Oberdorfer, Thomas, and <br />Wright. <br /> <br />Members absent: King. <br /> <br />Excused absences: Bailey, Jenkins, McKenzie, and Nackerud. <br /> <br />others present: Ron Moorse, Staff. <br /> <br />III. Business <br />A. Essay Contest Evaluation: <br />The Commission agreed that the Essay Contest was again <br />a success. <br /> <br />Several ideas were suggested for expanding the number <br />of people who are aware of the contest, and who attend <br />the Awards Ceremony. It was suggested that: <br /> <br />1. An article be placed in the city's October News- <br />letter promoting the contest. <br /> <br />2. Copies of the newspaper article regarding the <br />contest be forwarded to the school principals. <br /> <br />3. Teachers of the participating students be recognized <br />for their efforts. <br /> <br />4. A flyer announcing the Award ceremony be distributed <br />to the schools. <br /> <br />B. Good Citizenship Award: <br />Oberdorfer suggested that the Commission may want to <br />work through the Chamber of Commerce or other organiza- <br />tion to develop an Annual Good Citizenship Award Program. <br /> <br />C. Grievances: <br />A grievance regarding disability and employment was <br />assigned to Wright. <br /> <br />D. International Human Rights Day: <br />Oberdorfer attended the International Human Rights Day <br />Conference. She indicated it was very well done and <br />very informative. <br /> <br />E. Martin Luther King Tribute: <br />The plans for the Tribute were updated. It was <br />suggested that the st. Paul and Minneapolis newspapers <br />be contacted to publicize the event next year. <br />
