Human Rights Commission Minutes

2

December 12, 1989

Mary Litsheim suggested creating a flyer with Martin
Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech on it. They
could be placed on chairs prior to the tribute. Also,
Borden could read a portion of the speech during the
tribute.

3. Human Riqhts Excellence Award
A news release will be placed in the local papers
regarding the award contest. Materials explaining the
award contest will also be placed at the Library, in
the City's License Bureau, and on the main bulletin
board. The Commission determined that the due date for
nominations be changed from January 8 to January 28.

4. Commission Brochure
The Commission brochure needs to have two telephone
numbers updated. Oberdorfer's number is 631-0770 and
Lindberg's number is 483-5256.

v.

New
1.

Business
Commission Membership
The Commission discussed the addition of more members
to the Commission. Oberdorfer suggested as an alterna-
tive that outside people could be added to be on work
committees, but not necessarily go to meetings.

Borden suggested that subcommittees could be made up of
non-Commission members.

The Commission agreed that criteria need to be developed
for determining requirements for remaining on the Commis-
sion. King suggested the issue of adding members be
tabled until March.

The Commission also discussed the appointment of three
new members to the Commission to replace Edythe Nackerud,
Dave Bailey, and Thelma McKenzie. King suggested the
Commission members may want to sit in on the interviews
for new members. Oberdorfer suggested the Commission
members should be involved in determining the type of
people selected. Moorse suggested that the Commission
members may want to have input into a job description
for Commission members.

It was suggested that McKenzie should write down all
the information on what she does regarding the Martin
Luther King Day Tribute so that the Commission has that
information after she retires.

2. Human Riqhts Dav
Litsheim and Lindberg reported on the Human Rights Day
activities. They agreed that the activities and
speakers were both excellent.
