Norrgard proposed the following question for the 1993 Essay
Contest.
Why and how would you respond to your best friend when
that friend makes a racial remark about another person
you both know?
Waite moved, Trainor seconded, that the question be approved.
Roll Call: All ayes.
Menanteau suggested that the Commission expand to 9th and 10th
graders. Norrgard mentioned that that would be difficult
because many private schools stop at 8th grade. McKenzie
suggested having a poster contest for 9th and 10th graders.
Norrgard stated that the Commission should discuss any changes
they want to make to the Essay Contest early in 1994.
VI. Multi-Cultural Event Update
McKenzie mentioned that the security and administrative staff
at Rosedale are new so they do not know what took place at the
1992 Multi-Cultural Event. Therefare, they do not seem very
supportive of having the event at Rosedale.
Anderson stated that the Commission does not have enough time
to plan and execute the Multi-Cultural Event by October 23,
1993.
Borden stated that in the past the Multi-Cultural Event was
held on Martin Luther King Day which will be held on Monday,
January 17, 1994.
McKenzie stated that she would contact other commissions to
help with the event. Norrgard stated that he does not think
the event should take place unless they get help from other
commissions.
McKenzie moved that the October date be canceled and Monday,
January 17, 1994 be reserved for the Multi-Cultural Day.
Also, that she contact other communities to help with the
event. Anderson seconded. Roll Call: All ayes.
VII. Bias Hate Crime
Trainor handed out a draft of the Bias-Hate Crime Response
report to be reviewed by the Commission.
VIII.Grievances
Borden passed around a copy of some letters showing racial
discrimination between neighbors.
Two grievances were reported in August.
1) A women is filing a grievance against her condominium
association and building manager because of sexist
remarks and actions.
