~RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES
TUESDAY, JULY 9,1996

1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Chair Mike Trainor at 7:05 p.m.

2. Roll Call
Members present: Mike Trainor, Mary Jean Turinia Anderson, Janet Henquinet,
Mike Hermes, Jill Bergquist, Christine Malark and Susan
Forsyth.

Members absent: Thelma McKenzie, Issac Afwerke, and Margaret Murphy
Maertz.

Others present: Sally Chial, Staff Liaison.

3. Approval of Minutes
Mary Jean Turinia Anderson moved, Mike Hermes seconded, that the minutes of
the May 14, 1996 meeting be approved. Roll Call, Ayes: All present. Nays: None.

There were no June minutes as only four Commissioners were able to make it to
the meeting.

4. Bias Hate Crimes
No report.

5. Cable TV
Mike Hermes had no new information to report. However, he will continue to work
on developing a cable TV program. He will be contacting Carol Keyes, as she may
offer some additional ideas.

6. School Outreach Efforts
No report.

7. Student Commissioners
Mike Trainor discussed the voting status of student commissioners. Marcy Cordes
researched the ordinance and confirmed they serve in an ad hoc capacity and are
not voting members. It was decided that they will continue on this basis in lieu of
an ordinance change request.

The student commissioners are presently appointed by the Commissioners.
Without an ordinance change, student members would need to go through the City
Council Commission appointment process.

, .~
Ilk
