HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES
TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 1998

1) Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Michael Jordan at 7:06pm.

2) Roll Call
Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Eric Egli, Jan Gordon, Janet
Henquinet, Michael Jordan and Thelma McKenzie.

Members Absent: Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Mike Hermes and Mike Trainor.

Others Present: Marcella Houser, Youth Representative, and Debbie Zamow, Staff
Liaison.

3) Approval of Minutes
Henquinet moved, Gordon seconded that the minutes from the May 12 meeting be
approved. Motion passed unanimously.

4) Cable Program - Promotion/Human Rights Excellence Award
Jill Bergquist reported that Mike Hermes is scheduled to be on a show called "Tale
of 10 Cities" to talk about the Miss Roseville Pageant. She noted that the show
seems to be a forum that the Commission could use in order to promote itself to the
public. The show is airing on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and on
Thursday and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. during the month of June.

Ways to reach new residents were again discussed. Debbie Zamow reported that
the City was putting together a new resident packet but only a few sentences would
be included on each Commission. Eric Egli agreed to contact a member of the local
"Welcome Wagon" to see if they were interested in including a copy of the
Commission brochure with their materials. The brochure will be updated and
available for the "Welcome Wagon" at the next meeting.

NSCC Special Programming Grant are now available. It was discussed whether the
Commission would attempt to receive a grant in order to promote the Human Rights
Excellence Award and to possibly set up some public service announcements
regarding human rights. The grant application deadline is June 30. Jill Bergquist
moved, Janet Gordon seconded that the Commission:
1) apply for the grant
2) set up a subcommittee composed of Thelma McKenzie, Jan Gordon, Mike
Hermes and Janet Henquinet(as editor) to complete the grant application
3) designate the next Commission meeting to formulate ideas for the program
Motion passed unanimously.
