HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15,1998

1) Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Jill Bergquist at 8:05pm.

2) Roll Call
Members present: Jill Bergquist, Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Eric Egli, Janet
Henquinet, Mike Hermes, and Michael Jordan.

Members Absent: Issac Afwerke, Jan Gordon and Thelma McKenzie.

Others Present: Dr. John Thein, School Superintendent, Steve Bloom, School Social
Worker, Marcella Houser, Youth Representative, and Debbie Zamow, Staff Liaison.

3) Approval of Minutes
Hermes moved, Jordan seconded that the minutes from the August 11 meeting be
approved. Motion passed unanimously.

4) Dr. John Thein, Roseville School Superintendent
Dr. John Thein and Steve Bloom were introduced and spoke about the Roseville
School District's commitment to multi-cultural learning and diversity through the
SEED program and peer mediation.

Dr. Thein spent some time talking about SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and
Diversity). The program is designed to train teachers, counselors and support staff
to respect diversity and model behavior.

Steve Bloom spoke about the high school's peer mediation program and the success
that they have found by allowing students to solve their own conflicts in a
confidential setting. The program has been active in the high school for seven years
and elementary students have been working in pairs to deescalate potentially violent
situations for some time as well. Mr. Bloom stated that he has not seen great
success with the peer mediation program with issues related to race since the
parties affected tend to be large groups of people.

Dr. Thein invited the Commissioners to get involved with the school district by
attending meetings of the Curriculum Committee, holding joint Human Rights
Commission meetings at Roseville Area High School, or taking a tour of the schools.
