<br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MINUTES <br />TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8,1998 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />The meeting was called to order by Jill Bergquist at 7:05pm. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Brenda Boily-Salmanpour, Eric Egli, <br />Jan Gordon, Mike Hermes, and Thelma McKenzie. <br /> <br />Members Absent: Janet Henquinet and Marcella Houser, Youth Representative <br /> <br />Others Present: Debbie Zamow, Staff Liaison. <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br />Egli moved, Hermes seconded that the minutes from the October 13 meeting be <br />approved. Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />4) Bias Complaint <br />As of the meeting date, the complainant has not returned the intake form. <br /> <br />Zamow reported that another request for an intake form has come in. The form was <br />sent out. <br /> <br />5) Human Rights Essay Contest <br />Essays were pre-read by Bergquist and Hermes to screen out the best essays. <br />Eleven essays were presented to the Commission for grading. After grading those <br />essays, Egli moved, Boily-Salmanpour seconded that the 1998 Human Rights Essay <br />Contest winners are as follows: <br /> <br />151 Place Craig Deutsch <br />2nd Place Robert Fandrich <br />3rd Place Becca Sullivan <br />Honorable Mention Pat Mitsch <br />The motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />St. Rose of Lima <br />St. Rose of Lima <br />St. Rose of Lima <br />St. Rose of Lima <br /> <br />Bergquist read an essay by Charlie Socha that did not pass the initial reading so that <br />the Commission could possible respond to Socha, by letter, with respect to the racist <br />incident he referred to in his essay. The Commission overwhelmingly asked to <br />consider the essay with the others that were already graded. Discussion ensued <br />regarding the Commission's past procedures of pre-reading the essays and only <br />grading the top few. McKenzie made a motion to make the Socha essay the first <br />place winner, Hermes seconded. Motion failed unanimously. <br />
