<br />Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />Tuesday, March 13,2001 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />Chair Alexis Orosz called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members present: Jill Bergquist, Rita Stanoch, Phillip Crump, Howard Wagner, <br />Thelma McKenzie, Stephen Smith, Alexis Orosz and staff liaison - Christine <br />Butterfield. <br /> <br />Members Absent: Issac Afwerke and Brenda Boily-Salmanpour. <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br />The Commission unanimously approved both the June 13,2000 and February 13, <br />2001 minutes. <br /> <br />4) Essay Contest <br />Chair Orosz thanked all of the commissioners for participating. She went on to say <br />that the event was well reccived by the community. Commission Bergquist thank the <br />other commissioners as well. The commission requested that staffforward the essays <br />to the Minnesota Department of Human Rights for publication in the agencies <br />periodical. In addition, that staff place the winners on the web site. <br /> <br />5) City of Roseville - Police Department Overview of the Intake Process <br />The Deputy Chief of Police - Tom Alleva provided a 60-minute overview of the <br />system used to respond to claims of officer misconduct. Deputy Chief Alleva <br />indicated that the Department policies are updated every three years. The officers <br />Bill of Right outline an officer's duty in the Roseville Policy book. The Policy <br />provides that the Department will respond to a complaint in writing. Tom mentioned <br />that the Department uses the same form for commendations. In 2000, the Department <br />received 26 complaints and 4 were external including: claim of speeding, lack of <br />courtesy and no response to a call. <br /> <br />Commissioner Bergquist asked if a compliant were made to the Department would <br />the Commission receive notification. <br /> <br />Deputy Chief Alleva indicated that he planned to retire at the end of the month and <br />that the new Deputy will be available for questions and assistance. <br /> <br />6) Community Outreach <br />A. General - Commissioner Bergquist suggested that the Commission use the <br />"Teaching Tolerance Videos" for the library workshop. Commissioner Crump <br />expressed interest to meet with students and/or school officials. Commissioner <br />Wagner agreed to contact the library to request meeting space to conduct a future <br />meeting and will report on April 10. <br />
