<br />Human Rights Commission Minutes <br />Tuesday, April 10, 2001 <br /> <br />1) Call to Order <br />Chair Alexis Orosz called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. <br /> <br />2) Roll Call <br />Members present: Issac Afwerke, Jill Bergquist, Phillip Crump, Howard Wagner, <br />Thelma McKenzie, Stephen Smith, Alexis Orosz and staffliaison - Christine <br />Butterfield. <br /> <br />Members Absent: Rita Stanoch and Brenda Boily-Salmanpour. <br /> <br />3) Approval of Minutes <br />The Howard Wagner Moved and Phillip Crump seconded the approval of the minutes <br />of March 13, 2001. The Commission unanimously approved the March 13, 2001 <br />minutes. <br /> <br />4) Community Awareness Status <br />Howard Wagner reported that the Ramsey County Library has rooms available for the <br />Commission to use. The Library may also co-sponsor events with the Commission. <br />Rooms seat 25-30 people and are set with audiovisual equipment. Jill Bergquist <br />mentioned that a video is available. Phillip asked ifthere are any local people that <br />might be interested in speaking. Stephen Smith requested the Howard serve as the <br />decision maker. Howard noted that the Library might also publish event in their <br />calendar of events. Stephen Smith suggested that the Commission introduce itself <br />and function then show a video and look for speakers after the first public meeting. <br />Jill Bergquist mentioned that the AFS group would like to add their name to sponsor <br />events too. Alexis Orosz suggested that the Commission assign a subcommittee to <br />put together a program. Howard Wagner and Phillip Crump agreed to serve and <br />report back to the Commission on May 8, 2001. <br /> <br />5) Hate Crimes Network Letter and Contact Lists <br />The Commission reviewed the packet used in the past and Commissioner Bergquist <br />provided a revised letter and directed the staff liaison to prepare to letters and update <br />the list of contacts. <br /> <br />Thelma McKenzie asked when the Commission planned to hold an orientation <br />meeting for network members and suggested June 12, 2001. Commissioner <br />McKenzie also suggested that the MN League or the State Demographers Office <br />could assist. Thelma volunteered to speak with these groups prior to the May <br />meeting. <br />
