Johanna said she sees many opportunities to work together. She is looking for a
representative to serve on the District Diversity Committee. The District is also planning
to set up a Curriculum Committee and sees the Commission having a role in that.

Johanna said that some of the challenges that the District faces include almost exclusively
Caucasian teaching staff and an increasing percentage of students of color. She is
looking to broaden teachers' cultural understanding. She also wants to recruit and keep
teachers of color. Johanna sees an eagerness among most teachers wanting information
about issues of racism. Teachers think this is an issue relevant to them. Johanna said she
also wants to involve parents in these issues and decisions.

Commission members discussed difficulties that occur in the school system.

Thelma asked if anyone is interested in serving on the Diversity Committee. Karen Vnuk
expressed interest. The Commission will get back to Johanna.

Committee Reports

Since time was getting late, Thelma asked Commission members to submit their ideas to
meet committee goals to Carolyn and she would distribute before the next meeting.

.
