Human Rights Commission
Meeting Minutes, October 8, 2002

Present: Chair Thelma McKenzie, Phillip Crump, Martha Hardesty, Steve Smith, Karen
Vnuk, Larry Voeller, Howard Wagner, Steve Zorn,

Absent: Mark Chapin and Hannah Neprash

Staff: Carolyn Curti

Others: Marion Helland, Johanna Eager, Harold Torrence

The meeting was called to order by Phillip Crump at 7:07 p.m.

Howard Wagner moved to accept the minutes of September 10 and Steven Zorn
seconded the motion. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved without changes.

Essay Contest Update

Howard Wagner reported that he visited the area schools and distributed the question.
Martha Hardesty said that she visited Parkview Schools and talked with three classes of
eighth grade Social Studies students. One student indicated that he wanted to be
acknowledged for participating in last year's essay. The Commission members discussed
ways to acknowledge students who participate but do not win.

The Commission expects to get about 200 essays from the Middle School and 80 from
Parkview in addition to other schools that participate. As in past years, all essays will be
read by a Commission member and the best essays are then sent on. All Commission
members review the top essays and assign points. The top point getter wins.

Leagne of Minnesota Hnman Rights Commissions Annual Meeting

Howard Wagner spoke briefly about the meeting. Karen Vnuk was the emcee, and Mark
Chapin was the Parliamentarian. The meeting was well attended, about 100 participants.
They offered several different workshops.

(Chair Thelma McKenzie arrived)

Marion Helland

Phil Crump introduced Marion Helland. Marion told about herself and her involvement
in human rights issues since the 1960s. She was a teacher and is active with the Golden
Valley Human Rights Commission. Marion presented information about how to connect
with schools.
