Human Rights Commission
Meeting Minutes, January 14, 2003

Present: Chair Thelma McKenzie, Mark Chapin, Phillip Crump, Martha Hardesty, Karen Vnuk,
Larry Voeller, Howard Wagner, Steve Zorn
Absent: Steve Smith, Patty Tschida
Staff: Carolyn Curti

The meeting was called to order by Chair Thelma McKenzie at 7:05 p.m.

Approve Minutes

Steve Zorn moved to accept the minutes of December 10,2002. Karen Vnuk seconded the
motion. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved.

Chair Thelma McKenzie introduced Mayor John Kysylyczyn.

Mayor Kysylyczyn requested that the Commission assist the City in two matters. I) Advise the
City Council on ways to recruit a more diverse pool of applicants to serve on Commissions and
task forces. 2) Advise the City Council on appropriate meeting room policies for City buildings.

Commission members briefly discussed the issues with Mayor Kysylyczyn. After his
presentation, Mayor Kysylyczyn left the meeting.

Martin Luther King Day Activities

The Commission purchased 19 posters to be distributed to public and private schools in the
Roseville Area School District. Several Commissioners took posters to distribute by January 15.

Phil Crump contacted Hollywood Video to see whether they would display videos to
commemorate Martin Luther King. He was not successful in talking with the person who can
make this happen.

Thelma McKenzie asked Commissioners for other ideas. Commissioners suggested approaching
the Library about displaying books. Howard Wagner will work with Phil on this issue.

Youth Commission Recruitment Efforts

Carolyn Curti explained that she distributed flyers seeking a Youth Commission member to the
local schools and to locations where youths meet. She sent information to the media, and
information is posted on the City webpage and in City Hall.

Based on Mayor Kysylyczyn's request, Thelma McKenzie asked Commissioners for suggestions
to recruit people to apply for Commissions and Task Forces. Commissioners suggested the
following: contact former members of Commissions, contact parents of past Essay Contest
winners, contact elected officials including Mindy Greiling, John Marty and Carl Jacobson and
contact local churches and businesses. Commissioners will also talk with neighbors and friends.
Karen Vnuk suggested that the Commission create a resource list.
