<br />City Sign age <br /> <br />Mark Chapin suggested that the Commission prepare a resolution to take to the City Couneil <br />requesting that the Council build signs that reflect information about the community. Mark will <br />work on a resolution and distribute via email for discussion at the February meeting. <br /> <br />Americans With Disabilities Act Complaint <br /> <br />In December a resident called because of difficulty getting a wheelchair while shopping at Kohls <br />Department Store. He filed a complaint with the State Department of Human Rights (DHR) and <br />said he would contact the City if DHR determined that there was discrimination based on <br />disability. The complainant has not contacted the City. Carolyn Curti will contact the <br />complainant. <br /> <br />A City employee had reported that she recently saw a wheelchair near the entrance of Kohls. <br />Mark Chapin said he would visit Kohls to see if they had wheelchairs easily accessible. The <br />Commission will discuss the next steps at the February meeting. <br /> <br />Meeting Room Policy <br /> <br />Commissioners discussed the City's current meeting room policy. Members asked which groups <br />currently use rooms and why. What are liability issues? Could the City charge a nominal fee? <br />Are groups actually using the Skating Center as a mailing address? Others asked if it appropriate <br />for the Commission to get involved in this issue. Others noted that political affiliation is not a <br />protected class. <br /> <br />After some discussion, Commissioners said they did not have enough information. <br />Commissioners requested that the City invite Parks and Recreation Director Lonnie Brokke to <br />the February meeting. They also requested a copy of the current policy. <br /> <br />Essay Contest <br /> <br />Thelma McKenzie spoke about the success of the Human Rights Essay Contest. 317 students <br />from three schools entered the contest. Commissioners applauded the efforts by the students and <br />the teachers. Commissioners commented that the greatest success is that these 7'h and 8th graders <br />thought about subjects that they rarely consider. <br /> <br />Commissioners submitted their scores for the top 32 essays. They were totaled and the top <br />winners were named. The winners and their families and teachers will be invited to the February <br />24 City Council meeting to be recognized. The presentation will be at 7:00 p.m. followed by <br />cookies and punch in the lower level of City Hall.
