Human Rights Commission Minutes January 10, 2006 Present: Thelma McKenzie, Janet Delmore, Scott Higbee, Ann Kenney, and Bob Venters Absent: Phillip Crump, Steve Smith Chair Janet Delmore called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Approve Minutes Commissioner Ann Kenney moved and Commissioner Scott Higbee seconded approval of the December 2005 minutes. Motion prevailed. Essay Contest Not all Commissioners had submitted their essays scores, so the Commission directed staff to total the scores and send the names of those who received the top scores. Meeting with Police Chief Commissioner Bob Venters and Commissioner Ann Kenney reported on their meeting with Police Chief Carol Sletner and Lieutenant Rick Mathwig. They reported that it was a positive meeting. Their goal was to lay the groundwork for a positive working relationship. They offered to be available to the Police Department for any discussions on human rights. The Chief and Lieutenant walked through what happens when the Police do a traffic stop. They also talked about the dangers Police officers face everyday. Officers must remain on alert -- anyone they meet could want to do them harm. Commissioners Venters and Kenney agreed to continue working on establishing a relationship with the Roseville Police Department. Tenants Rights Commissioner Venters raised concerns about tenants' rights and ensuring that homeowners do not take advantage of potential renters. Commissioners reviewed Commissioner Venters' document which outlined tenants' rights and responsibilities. He agreed to represent the Commission at the upcoming Housing and Redevelopment Authority meeting in which the HRA planned to hold a public hearing on rental licensing. 1
