Roseville Human Rights Commission Meeting Minutes - December 12, 2006 Page 6 of6 Continuation of Essay Discussion Further discussion ensued on the essay process and presentation to the City Council at their February 2007 meeting and the HRC's attendance at the meeting; consistency in individual Commissioner essay review; as well as clarifying the HRC rating and staff ranking process, and the deadline for providing individual selections to staff for processing (before the January HRC meeting). Other Each Commissioner expressed concern regarding the recent gang-related incident at the Roseville Area High School (RAHS); how the HRC could approach the situation and become involved in resolving ongoing issues at area schools; frustration with the continuing lack of communication when the HRC approaches school personal; the HRC's collective disgust with student behavior from a Human Rights and/or Women's Rights standpoint; and how the HRC could bring light to the situation, find a positive way to intervene and find a solution. Discussion included the apparent nation-wide problem at public schools; student transitions and involvement in a solution; need for a youth representative(s) on the HRC; apparent lack of interest in working with the HRC from Johanna Edwards, Diversity Coordinator at RAHS, and Ann Postlewaite, Activities Director/Coordinator at RAHS; and possible invitation to the School Superintendent to address the HRC. Commissioners concurred that they wanted to see a copy of the mailing (e-mail?) sent to parents of school children regarding the incident, in an effort to get the facts about the situation and possible solutions. It was also Commission consensus to contact Roseville Area Schools Superintendent John Thein to speak to the HRC. Further discussion included the prevalence of domestic violence and the HRC's purview of such issues; the apparent "brokenness" of the school system; and the stigma for black students to pursue involvement in honors programs. Commissioner Crump addressed his work in mentoring of young African American students, and encouraging children that excelling was an "education thing, not an ethnic thing;" and opined the need for parents to have higher expectations of their children, regardless of student peer pressure. Adjournment Chair Delmore moved and Commissioner Crump seconded adjournment of the meeting at 8:21 p.m.
