Councilmember Ihlan questioned whether a fac-
tual basis existed for the comments made by staff to the reporter; and
asked that the City Council pursue that discussion; and asked that staff
provide assistance in obtaining that information for the City Council
in an effort to have productive discussion and resolution.
Mayor Klausing asked Councilmember Ihlan to define what types of
reports and a clearer direction to staff.
Councilmember Ihlan asked how the information ended up in the Pio-
neer Press; what information does the City have available; what inter-
nal investigations have been done; and how to appropriately deal with
the issue.
Mayor Klausing requested Mr. Miller and staff to follow up on Coun-
cilmember Ihlan's request.
Mayor Klausing noted that, in his conversation with the reporter, he
had been informed by the reporter that she had received the informa-
tion from Ms. Delmore.
Police Chief Carol Sletner advised Councilmembers that the depart-
ment is contacted weekly by media for public information requests on
police calls on record; and that on this particular printout, the reporter
noted the obstruction of justice issue, and contacted Captain Rick
Mathwig for additional information.
Councilmember Ihlan suggested that it may be appropriate for the
City Council to review and determine policies on staff commenting on
serious matters where no charges have been brought.
