Since Langton Lake is a DNR protected water and DNR permits
will likely be required to grant approval for some aspects of this development, we would
like to inform you of same updated comments from the DNR's Nongame Wildlife
Program. These comments aze based, in part, on additional information we have reeentiy
received regarding wildlife use of Langton Lake Park.
In first first-ring suburbs such as Roseville, wildlife habitats are at a premium. Langton
Lake Park is unique in its location near busy commercial areas and major freeways. In
spite of its unlikely location, it is utilized by a wide variety of wildlife including some
150 bird species identified by Professor Thomas Soulen of the College of Biological
Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Professor Soulen is swell-known birder who
has surveyed bird populations in northern Ramsey County.
Habitat areas such as Langton Lake Park are becoming more critical in the metropolitan
area, especially as' feeding and resting areas for migratory songbirds and resident wildlife.
For this reason we believe that protection of this particular oasis could be enhanced by
adding. several acres of pazk dedication land to the edges of the park as a buffer against
the proposed development. We suggest that the redevelopment planning currently before
you is an ideal opportunity to expand the park boundaries, at least to the 300' shoreline
management district, if not further.
DNR Information: 651-296-6157 1-888-646-6367 TTY: 651-296-5484 1-800-657-3929
An Equal Opportunity Employer ~~ Printed on Recycled Paper Containing a
Minimum oC 104v Past-Consumer Waste
