Discussion -Discuss Native Seeding Areas on City Ilan Campus
Public Works Director Duane Schwartz provided background information on the
2003/04 City Hall/Public Safety building expansion and renovation, along with
the Maintenance Building renovation projects, including extensive site work and
measures to meet Rice Creek Watershed District stormwater requirements, park-
ing lot replacement and modifications. Mr. Schwartz reviewed the extensive dis-
cussions held with architects regarding cost-effective measures that could be im-
plemented within the scope of the project to meet some level of green building
standards and thereby reducing the City's carbon footprint. Mr. Schwartz noted
that one of those areas selected was construction of infiltration ponds and creation
of a native seeding area to reduce stormwater runoff and improve water quality,
particularly in areas where past difficulties had been realized in maintaining qual-
ity turf grass.
Mr. Schwartz provided, in his staff report, three (3) options for the Council's con-
sideration in reconstructing landscaping in the areas, and associated costs with
each.
Discussion included the size of the native prairie area (estimated at just under
5,000 square yards); reduction in manual maintenance as the native prairie area
matures, and depending on annual weather-related issues; number of complaints
received to-date on the area, and estimated at six (6) per season; nature of the
complaints being aesthetic; and associated costs and environmental impacts.
