• This project will encourage the Educational System to address issues of racism.
The teachers and actors along with advice from Commission members will create
a curriculum that addresses racism. The RHRC will promote the curriculum in
the Roseville Area School District and in other school districts outside of
Roseville.
Other students, parents and greater Roseville community will benefit from this
project. Parents and other students will hear about and see the initial play. This
will open opportunities for discussions about racism. In addition, members of the
community will be invited to the play that is developed in the fall. Following the
production, the RHRC will lead discussions about the messages in the
play/vignettes and about issues of racism in the community.
PROGRAM
The RHRC will work directly with (name of school) and a local theater to get students to
write and perform a play that addresses issues of racism that students either experienced
themselves or have seen in the community. We plan to work with the school throughout
the year 2003, so that two classrooms of students will create two separate plays, one in
Spring 2003 and one in Fall 2003. In the Spring 2003 we will work with the teacher(s)
and the theater company to develop a curriculum that can be used in future years.
Students will then perform the play for fellow students and parents.
• In Fa112003 we will again work with the teachers and theater com an to refine
curriculum and to get a new classroom of students to write a new play addressinghssues
of racism. Students will perform this play for fellow students, parents and members of
the community. Following the community performance, Human Rights Commission
members will hold roundtable discussions for anyone who wants to discuss issues in
more detail.
The RHRC believes that racial opinions and community attitudes are learned and by
reaching children and youth we can help youngsters to think about racism, to question
their attitudes and those of the community and to counter misconceptions that are
perpetuated through the media or heard in the community.
By producing two plays in two classrooms, our own Commission members will learn
more how our youth interpret events and the world around them. We will take the
experience from the first production and develop educational topics to discuss with
students, parents and community members following the fall production.
~J~
Human Rights Commission
~/ J
St Paul Foundation
Creating an Anti-Racist Community Grant Application
Page 3 of 5
