Director Schwartz noted that Jay was no stranger to the City
Public Works Departments, and recognized Jay's father in the audience tonight,
who had worked for the City of Roseville from 1968 - 1990, and currently em-
ployed by the City of Bloomington, MN. Director Schwartz expressed the staff's
desire that Jay keep in touch with staff, and committed staff to doing the same for
Jay in providing him with a more human connection in Roseville during his tour
of duty, and wished him a safe return to City staff.
b. Recognition of Jim Tschida
On behalf of the community, staff and City Council, Mayor Klausing recognized
and congratulated Jay's uncle, Jim Tschida, on his retirement from the Fire De-
partment after 32 years of service. Mayor Klausing, on a personal note, expressed
his pleasure in serving with Jim on the Fire Relief Board, and continuation of that
relationship even after Jim's retirement from active firefighter duty.
Fire Chief Rich Gasaway echoed Mayor Klausing's comments; and noted his
pride at being able to publicly recognize Jim along with the pain in losing him as
a co-worker in the Department. Chief Gasaway reviewed the many contributions
of Jim to the department, opining that he had yet to see his equal in his 30 years as
a firefighter in various organizations; Jim's dedication being the highest he'd ever
seen; and his willingness to pitch in to accomplish anything needing to be done,
whether fleet maintenance, committee work, or shifts to be filled. Chief Gasaway
expressed his personal pride in having served with Jim; and the difficulty in see-
ing him leave the organization; noting the most recent "house burn" and Jim's
training work with the young firefighters in sharing his experience with them.
Chief Gasaway presented Mr. Tschida with a plaque, similar to those presented to
retirees of the Department; recognizing Jim's unselfish dedication over his thirty-
two years of service, and displaying the five badges worn in that service to the
community of Roseville.
Firefighter and Relief Association member, Matt Beauchane, presented the tradi-
tional token, a watch engraved with Mr. Tschida's badge number and department
identification, and on behalf of the Relief Association and members of the Rose-
ville Fire Department, expressed their privilege and honor in having served with
Jim, and for his dedicated and faithful service to the Department.
6.
