Regular City Council Meeting <br />Monday, May 19, 2008 <br />Page 9 <br />Mayor Klausing opined that interactive training was much more interesting and <br />engaged attendees better than just a formal presentation or lecture format. <br />Further discussion related to the availability of materials on the City's website; <br />with City Manager Malinen advising that he would check to make sure it was ac- <br />cessible; as well as verifying that the DVD could be web streamed. <br />Ms. Pederson advised that the next Ethics Commission meeting agenda would in- <br />clude appointment of a new Chairperson; and City Manager Malinen advised that, <br />once Commissioner Schneider's formal resignation had been received, sufficient <br />time was available for the application process prior to the Commission's next <br />meeting scheduled for August. <br />Mayor Klausing and Councilmembers thanked Commissioners for their work and <br />encouraged them to carry that initiative forward. <br />11. Public Hearings <br />12. Business Items -Action Items <br />a. Appoint a New Councilmember <br />12 candidates applied and were interviewed for interim appointment to the City <br />Council until the Municipal General Election included: Michael Hermes; Jessica <br />Immerman; Jeff Johnson; John Kysylyczyn; Jeffrey Lervik; Dean Maschka; Gale <br />Pederson; Jody Ward-Rannow; Karen Schaffer; Bob Venters; Kristine Williams; <br />and Robert Willmus. <br />Mayor Klausing requested an update from City Attorney Squires on whether a re- <br />sponse from the Attorney General's office had been received regarding the term <br />for appointment of an interim Councilmember, and the normal term of office for a <br />newly-elected Councilmember at the General Election, and taking office on Janu- <br />ary 1, 2008. Mayor Klausing sought further clarification as to whether the pro- <br />posed language of the motion needed to be amended accordingly. <br />City Attorney Squires advised that an opinion from the Attorney General's office <br />was still pending, and concurred that language should be amended to preserve the <br />option to appoint for a shorter term, should the Attorney General's opinion sup- <br />port such term provisions. <br />Discussion ensued on potential language, with Mayor Klausing requesting City <br />Attorney Squires to draft language at the bench during City Council discussion on <br />the appointment process. <br />Mayor Klausing sought individual Councilmember input on a process for ap- <br />pointment. <br />
