Special Joint Meeting Roseville City Council
and the Roseville Area School Board, District No. 623
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Page 4
vate schools (i.e., food services, summer educational programs, and recreational
programming).
Further discussion included the Fairview Community Center and its importance to
the community.
Superintendent Thein noted that the facility was definitely a gem in the commu-
nity; had multi-general uses; and highlighted some of the current uses (i.e., birth
through twilight of life intergenerational programming; Fairview Alternative High
School; Senior congregate dining with High School students; home-delivered
meals; Special Education programming; and the pool use by senior citizens and
competitive swim programs).
Superintendent Thein noted that a major concern is in cash flowing the building,
and the pool upgrading; and recognized the community support for the recent
School District referendum, and the District's resolve to honor that vote of sup-
port, and make the building viable for the District. Superintendent Thein also
noted, independent of the City, the District's plan to continue providing green
space for the entire community, as well as the tennis courts at Fairview; and ad-
vised that the biggest issue at this time was parking shortages due to the great
success of the building's use.
Chair Gogins noted that, prior to EPAC#1, it was originally the intent for the Dis-
trict to move out of the Fairview building; however, she noted that was no longer
a need due to increased enrollment and the different situation that had developed.
Councilmember Pust encouraged the School Board to make sure the community
repeatedly heard that new message from the School District, as many remained
threatened by that possible closure.
c. Student Survey and Demographics Information
Superintendent Thein introduced Karen Schaub of the School District's staff, who
provided summary data from the 2004 and 2007 Minnesota Student Survey
(MSS) comparative data from Roseville Area Schools, which is administered
every three (3) years to students in grades six, nine and twelve. Ms. Schaub also
provided an update based on October 1, 2007 data on some of those demographic
highlights.
Discussion included mobility and changing nucleus of families; receipt by the
District of a Safety and Health Grant in collating the representative data; how to
address the data for the greatest impact (i.e., curriculum development and com-
munity services); and accuracy of the survey based on student interpretation.
