Regular City Council Meeting <br />Monday, June 16, 2008 <br />Page 25 <br />• Ma or Kl <br />y ausmg expressed his support of the proposed ordinance to <br />provide broader provisions for Council vacancies. <br />Mayor Klausing questioned whether Councilmembers were confident <br />that this was the direction the community wanted to move, and <br />whether they saw a need to solicit additional public input and/or <br />whether to create a citizen group to look into the proposed language. <br />Councilmember Pust opined that she didn't see the need fora formal- <br />ized advisory study, given past discussions. <br />Councilmember Roe noted the need to solicit public comment prior to <br />formal action; noting previous deliberations over the last few months <br />and public comment received to-date; but didn't see the need for an <br />advisory group to study it further. <br />City Manager Malinen alerted Councilmembers to some challenges <br />depending on lead time, in the availability of polling places and staff- <br />. ing for special elections. <br />Mayor Klausing recognized those concerns, in addition to other is- <br />sues, that may be beneficial for a citizen group to consider. <br />Public Comment <br />John Kysylyczyn, 3083 N Victoria Street <br />Mr. Kysylyczyn noted the difficulty in getting public comment out- <br />side an immediate crisis; and stated his opposition to a study group. <br />Al Sands, 2612 Aldine <br />Mr. Sands echoed the comments of Mr. Kysylyczyn, opining his sup- <br />port for the participatory election process; and thanked Councilmem- <br />ber Roe for bringing the proposed ordinance forward. Mr. Sands sug- <br />gested that the City Council stir up local issues or create controversy <br />to encourage more public participation and voters in upcoming elec- <br />tions. <br />• 14.
