Regular City Council Meeting Monday, October 27, 2008 Page 3 At the request of Mayor Klausing, City Manager Malinen reported on the first completed class of this community outreach program to educate and inform citizens of local gov- ernment and services. Mr. Malinen noted the involvement of seven City departments, along with City Councilmembers; and feedback to-date from participants. Mr. Malinen personally thanked Department Heads and their immediate staff for their extra commit- ment and attendance on those Thursday nights, for teaching the classes, and providing in- formation to participants. Mayor Klausing thanked staff and participants; providing his personal favorable impres- sions of the program based on his attendance at the commencement ceremony. Councilmember Roe suggested that those participants be recognized formally by the City Council. a. Recognize Fire Explorers Deputy Chief Greg Peterson reviewed the purpose of the Roseville Fire Explore Post #547 program and it's creation in 2000, allowing students between the ages of 14 - 21 the opportunity to learn firefighter and emergency medical skills. Dep- uty Chief Peterson recognized participants Noah Ciernia, Ryan Buelow, Tom Borden, Alex Breiland, Tim Picha, Nick Strauss, and Mitch Goggins for their achievements this year at the Fire Explorer Challenge at the Governor's Fire Pre- vention Day, taking first place in the event among thirteen other competing teams. Mayor Klausing further recognized post advisors Deputy Chief Greg Peterson, Deputy Chief Bill Chandler, Lieutenants Kristi Sjostrom, Joe Friedrichs, Fire- fighters Bill Buelow, A. J. Neis, and Andy Chandler. b. Proclaim November American Indian Heritage Month Mayor Klausing, on behalf of the City Council, citizens and staff, read a procla- mation recognizing November 2008 as American Indian Heritage Month. Pust moved, Ihlan seconded, proclaiming November 2008 at American Indian Heritage Month in Roseville, and urging all citizens to join in appreciation for the community's rich and diverse heritage.
