Roseville Human Rights Commission 2008 Dialogue
The Roseville Human Rights Commission hosted a community dialogue on
October 14, 2008, with the assistance of the Greater Twin Cities United Way
Guttural Dynamics. On November 13, 2008, the Human Rights Commission held
a dialogue debriefing session. Based on feedback from the Human Rights
Commission debriefing session and participant feedback from the dialogue, the
following areas of focus would be beneficial to the subsequent dialogue:
1. What worked:
There were 80 plus people in attendance and the group was very diverse. Food was
great and the speakers were well received. The United Way Checklist kept the
planning group on tract.
2. Logistical improvements:
Use a round table for the sign in and a big world map where people can place a push
-pin of where they come from. Possibly use round tables for villages. Get speakers
to focus their talk on their personal and professional experience and why they moved
to the Roseville community. Need more microphones to hear other people in the
large group.
3. Improvements in the planning and implementation process:
Publish a planning calendar and devote more time to planning. Encourage members
of Planning Team to be specific with commitments and responses and operate with a
clearer sense of "urgency/importance". Contact League of Women Voters regarding
partnering with the second dialogue. Offer tools and next steps and in the small
villages, offer fewer questions with more focus.
4. Recommended subjects for next dialogue:
• The roles of men and women
• Public places, how to make them feel more friendly.
• How to integrate cultures and all "win" from the integration.
• More input from none USA cultural experience
• Racism, white privilege
• Stereotypes as it relates to ethnic backgrounds.
•
