i J ~ y~~~ <br />HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION <br />Pur ose <br />The Commission is appointed by and serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council <br />in the area of human rights. <br />1. Provides a vehicle for citizen input concerning human rights issues. <br />2. Monitors and keeps the Council advised concerning human rights issues in the <br />City. <br />3. Assists in carrying out the purpose of the Minnesota Human Rights Act. <br />4. Provides public education activities concerning human rights issues. <br />5. Promotes a positive human rights climate in the community. <br />6. Resolves discrimination complaints through an informal mediation process. <br />7. The Commission does not handle complaints internal to the City organization. <br />Size of Commission <br />Seven members <br />Meeting Schedule <br />Second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. <br />Role of Individual Members <br />1. Participate in Commission Meetings <br />A. Provide ideas and suggestions concerning public education and <br />promotional activities regarding human rights issues. <br />B. Assist in planning and organizing events and activities. <br />2. Monitor the Human Rights climate in the community and identify problems <br />and issues. <br />3. Participate in public education and promotional events regarding human rights. <br />4. Ensure the confidentiality of all parties in a grievance process. <br />Role of the Commission Chair <br />1. Prepares the agenda for Commission meetings. <br />2. Presides at Commission meetings: <br />A. Expedites the meeting process <br />B. Ensures rules of meeting procedure are followed, including Roberts <br />Rules of Order as modified by the Commission. <br />
